“Listen to the Mrs.” is WSGW NewsRadio 790’s local recipe and helpful hints show. This popular show has been on the air continuously since 1952. Art Lewis and Sue Smith are on the air 10am-11:30am, every Monday through Friday, and 10am to 11am on Saturdays taking calls from all over the country. Listeners call in with their questions and comments or to share recipes and helpful hints. From cookies to casseroles, to taking a stain out of your favorite shirt, Art & Sue have your answer.
The show started in 1952 as a kitchen-to-kitchen network connecting homemakers throughout the Saginaw Valley by way of their telephones and radios. Listen to the Mrs. has since become the longest running daily radio program in the Saginaw area, with a large and loyal family listening to Art Lewis and Sue Smith who have been on the show together since 1987.
The show broadcast began as a fifteen minute a day feature for women, and has evolved into a 90 minute show Monday-Friday and one hour show on Saturday serving men, women, and children alike all over the state, as well as the country now that WSGW is streaming on the internet.
Maturing into a true show of the new millenium, “The Mrs.” started out with rapidly growing card files of recipes and helpful hints when Fred Krell hosted the show. After his retirement in 1984, the recipes were entered into a computer which helps Art and Sue retrieve recipes quickly.
Over the years, Art and Sue have enjoyed weekly visits to the show from “secret recipe detective” Gloria Pitzer, as well as special guests “diet guru” Joanna Lund, Elizabeth Post and Heloise!
While hosting “Listen to the Mrs” is a true labor of love for Art and Sue, WSGW is truly grateful to our family of listeners who have made it the success that it is!
Art Lewis has been talking to audiences for better than 4 decades, doing talk shows as far back as 1965. He is part of the Saginaw, Michigan based WSGW Radio Morning Team, host of his own morning talk show, and co-host, along with Sue Smith, of “Listen to the Mrs.”.
Art enjoys time in the kitchen whipping up his favorite creations, primarily with an Asian influence. Growing up in The Bronx, New York City, his parents fed him a steady diet of oriental foods. Art always thought Chinese Food was a basic food group. He has also served as a judge for American Culinary Federation Hot Food Cmpetitions as well as the Crisco National Pie Championship.
Art is extremely active in the community serving on many non-profit boards. He has won several awards for his volunteering including the Saginaw County Chamber of Commerce “Spirit of Saginaw” award, the Saginaw County Bar Association’s “Liberty Bell”, the Saginaw Arts and Enrchment Commision’s “All Area Arts Award”, and the MDA’s “Spirit of Sharing” recognition.. Art also served 4 years as chairfman of the Saginaw County Visitors Bureau.
Celebrating 45 years of marriage, Art and his lovely wife Linda have two grown sons, Blair and Scott. They live in a 150 year old farm house with their 2 Shih Tsu dogs, Miki and Moose.
Sue has been in radio since 1983. Growing up in Petoskey, Michigan, Sue graduated from North Central Community College before going on to Central Michigan University where she got her BSBA (including a textiles class – who would have figured she’d end up on a cooking show and use some of that knowledge years later!).
After getting her “Mrs. degree” in 1986, she joined “Listen to the Mrs” and has been co-host ever since. Happily married to Scott for nearly 25 years, the two are proud parents of Scott Jr (22) and Melissa (20) (and “19-year-old Kellycat”).
In addition, Sue is Enrichment Director at Wescourt Retirement, enjoys sewing, piano, accordion playing (much to Art’s dismay), cooking, baking and reading. She is also an active member of St. Thomas Aquinas Church, lay minister and READ Association board member.
